ViDOFON tips for using video conferencing systems
Camera location:
The camera should be placed on the monitor, as only looking directly into the camera gives you the feeling of looking at the opposite person in the eyes.
Where do I place the eye contact while using a projector?
The location must be selected in such a way that the projector does not beam into the camera. Make the following adjustment to get eye contact: The projector stands back-to-back with the video conferencing device. In this way, the projector light does not affect the camera and both partners have eye contact. Naturally the projector can be absolutely elevated with this adjustment (on the ceiling).
Room layout:
The arrangement of seats should be made in such a way that nobody is blocked from view. As far as possible, place the microphone in such a way that all participants are at the same distance from the microphone. Parabolic or semicircular tables are an excellent choice for this purpose. External noise sources should be blocked.
Colors:
Blue, grey, or warm beige are excellent for video conferencing rooms. Apart from black or white, patterned backgrounds are likewise not recommended. One must essentially strive for a low contrast ratio between foreground and background.
The participants must preferably dress in muted colors. Stripes and diamonds must be avoided because of possible interference.
Light:
The room must be illuminated well with soft lights. It is recommended to use the same color temperature for all lamps. Lamps should be placed so as to avoid undesired shadows - e.g. in faces. It is best to use a light from the front, which can be shifted sideways and upwards. Diffused (distributed) light is certainly more preferable than spot lights. The lights must not be pointed directly at the camera and must not create any reflections on the monitor.
