ViDOFON at Games Convention 2006 providing Videoconferencing Service for LucasArts
From August 24 to August 27, 2006 the Games Convention took place in Leipzig. It ended with a record of visitors with 183,000 visitors(2005: 134,000). Also the media interest was notably increased with 2.600 journalists from 38 countries (2005: 2,000 journalists from 26 countries).
At the Games Convention 2006 LucasArts and Activision Deutschland were represented together with a huge stand.
LucasArts developed the game Star Wars Galaxies, based on the Star Wars films from George Lucas. Star Wars Galaxies is played online and world-wide by a huge community of players.
It was the wish of the developers from LucasArts to get in contact with the players during the Games Convention 2006 to exchange experiences and questions.
A part of the staff was present at the fair in Leipzig and the developers in Austin/USA.
ViDOFON was employed by LucasArts to realise the complete organisation and the carrying out of a videoconference between Leipzig and Austin on August 24 and 25.
This task included the adjustment with the opponent in Austin and the installation/testing of the videoconference hardware in Leipzig.
In Leipzig a ViDOFON employee was present during the whole of the event who made sure the carrying out was trouble-free.
Both sites used a Sony videoconferencing system - the connection was made via a broadband IP-connection. At the same time the conference was recorded in the MPEG4 format.
In Leipzig on August 24 and 25 from 9 to 11 a.m. there were members of staff from LucasArts and up to 50 players from several European countries (such as Italy, Denmark). They partly travelled there specifically for the videoconference.
Within the framework of the videoconference they got the opportunity to ask questions and to discuss the current development of the game live and directly with the developers.
This way of communication was actively used by the participants and presented an absolute speciality. Players and programmers can hardly work together more closely at the further development of Star Wars Galaxies.
The framework programme included lotteries, a free breakfast buffet and the possibility to have a picture taken with the original characters from Star Wars.
After the in every way successful event thanks to videoconferencing, LucasArts already announced to repeat such meetings.
